Pasadena Police to Crackdown Red Light Violators

The most basic rule is many times the most violated rule – this is true enough with traffic lights. The rule that is supposed to be followed by any driver happens to be the most favorite rule to be disregarded.

In Pasadena, police officials are taking extra effort to remind motorists and pedestrians about the importance of abiding with traffic rules, such as obeying traffic lights. The high number of car accidents due to simple traffic infractions led authorities to strictly implement existing laws.

According to news reports, Pasadena Police officials have increased patrol presence near determined accident-prone intersections. Reports added that officials will be positioned around Pasadena to supervise from 6 a.m. until noon to sufficiently monitor particular intersections.

In all parts of California, Vehicle Code (VC) 21461 is in effect in order to maintain traffic safety and orderliness. The said VC makes it unlawful for drivers to disregard sign or signal that aims to improve traffic safety and operations.

Traffic rule violations, no matter how simple or common, may cause so much trouble and injury to motorists. Studies show that even a mere red light infraction may result in fatal car accidents. Under the tort law, a driver who fails to comply with basic traffic rules and causes injury to another individual may be held liable for economic and non-economic damages to the victim.

Child Safety is Our Priority – Transportation Chief LaHood

New child seat guidelines have been adopted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to bear with the most modern research and innovations on child safety on vehicles. The guidelines, released Monday, recommended parents and caregivers to hold children in each restraint type as long as they fit in before using the next type of seat.

The updated guidelines are in compliant with the recommendation of the American Academy of Pediatrics that suggest keeping children in rear-facing restraints up to two yrs. old or until they already attained the maximum weight or height allowed by the manufacturer of the safety seat. Parents need not have to rush their children’s transition to the next restraint type.

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood also exclaimed, “Safety is our highest priority.” “The ‘best’ car seat is the one that fits your child, fits your vehicle and one you will use every time your child is in the car,” he further said.

Ski Lift Accident in Maine May Have Been Caused by Wind and Mechanical Error

Right before New Year, a scary ski accident occurred in Maine which injured 8 people (3 of them seriously) and stranded 150 other skiers for more than an hour on a defective ski lift.

Allegedly, Sugarloaf Resort’s 35-year old lift got derailed, causing 5 chairs and passengers to plummet 25-30 feet down the mountain. The lift is 4,013 feet long with an elevation of 1,454 feet — although it recently passed an inspection, even the resort’s manager admitted that it was vulnerable to strong winds.

Right before the accident occurred, 2 chairlift mechanics were called to fix the lift’s cable which was out of alignment. However, as they failed to repair it, the resort moved to close the lift but when they restarted it to free the skiers, the lift’s cable came off its track. Five adults and three children were taken to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington.

Teen Killed in Rollover Crash in Pacoima

There’s a saying that goes, “Live fast, die young” and speed-related car accidents are the best example of it.

A young man in Southern California was killed in a fatal rollover crash when his vehicle veered off the freeway.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the deceased, 19-year old David Alejandro Garcia of North Hills was driving at a high rate of speed when he made a westbound turn to 118 Freeway.

Allegedly, Garcia drove his 2008 Toyota Scion off the east side of the road and it rolled over several times while falling down the embankment.

Garcia was killed immediately because he was not wearing a seatbelt and got ejected from the vehicle.

There are many factors to consider in what may have caused this fatal accident – from speeding, to teen driving, and to even the victim’s failure to wear a seatbelt, these are all known causes of motor vehicle crashes and deaths.

While speeding appears to be the primary culprit for the crash, the root cause of it can be traced to the teen driver. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among 13-19 year-old males and females in the United States. Teenage drivers particularly especially male teens, are a recognized road hazard. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, 2 out of every 3 teenagers killed in motor vehicle crashes in 2009 were males.

Immaturity and lack of experience aside, young male drivers, are also more likely to be guilty of driving too aggressively, speeding, failing to follow traffic rules and signals and even drunk driving.

Aside from reckless and negligent operation of vehicles, teens are actually less likely to wear seatbelts. In 2009, belt use for fatally injured passenger vehicle drivers aged 16-19 years old are only at 41 percent. It’s worse among fatally injured 16-19 year-old passengers who buckle up at a mere rate of 29 percent.

Taking all of these into account, it’s not really a surprise why more teens die in car crashes than any other age group. If you’re a parent, you can educate and inculcate values of safe driving in your teens to help keep them safe on the road. But if your child gets into an accident, you may be held liable for civil damages so you should seek the services of a car accident attorney.
