Product recalls are generally initiated when products are found to be defective or harmful. This is done to prevent or avoid potential harm and injuries that a defective product may cause on the consumers. Contaminated food and missing or faulty parts are only some of the common causes that could trigger product recall.

Just recently, giant auto manufacturer Chrysler Group LLC has initiated the recall of some 11, 351 vehicle due to missing and incorrectly installed steering column. Small thing as it may seem but based on documents from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, this pivot driver could cause loss of steering control that may result in a crash.

Under the law, a product recall is necessary during these circumstances:

1. When a vehicle or item of a vehicle equipment (including tires) does not comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard

2. When a safety-related defect in the vehicle or equipment exists
Fortunately, no reports of accidents and injuries have been reported yet as the company had cooperated early with the agency.

The affected vehicle include Chrysler 200 and 200 convertible cars, Town and Country minivan, Dodge Avenger, Caliber, Caravan, Journey and Nitro vehicles, and Jeep Compass, Liberty, Patriot and Wrangler SUVs.

As part of the agreement, recalled vehicles will be inspected by the dealers who will inspect and repair the steering column pivot as required. The recall will begin this month.

Injuries incurred from accidents caused by defective vehicle parts or faulty design may hold the manufacturers of the vehicle liable under the principle of negligence. In product liability cases, injured victims can file a strict liability claim against manufacturers of a defective product and recover damages from them.
